Recruitment Can Be Frustrating, Expensive, And Time Consuming

The hiring process can be tedious to say the least, and often requires a significant investment of time, money, and energy to ensure that the right candidate is ultimately chosen.


Surveys conducted by the US Conference Board have shown that hiring managers often spend 10 to 15 weeks in job advertising, screening, and interviewing applicants for positions. The monetary costs per year can range anywhere from $17,000 to $43,000. This number can increase if you invest weeks of time and effort into on-boarding only to see an employee quit six months later, you’ve essentially wasted all of those resources. If this happens multiple times per year, the financial impact can be devastating.


Three Of The Most Common Hiring Costs


1. Internal HR - If you have the bare minimum, you have at least one hiring manager or recruiter on your team. Salaries differ across the United States, but general estimates according to The Bureau Of Labor Statics show in 2020 the salary range anywhere from $62,000 to $120,000, for one HR employee.


2. Employment Agency Fees - Also known as recruiting, staffing, or hiring agencies most commonly work on a model where they are paid a contingency fee. A service that cost anywhere from 15 to 25% of the employee’s annual salary, with more senior positions on the higher end of the scale. In one study, reported by Investopedia, over 100 companies disclosed their total spend on external agency fees and it added up to over $18,000 per year – and that's for a single placement!


3. Advertising/Job Posting Sites - In 2018 a LinkedIn job post costs $495 for a 30-day listing but in 2021 a new pricing model rolled out. They have moved into a price-per-day version, very similar to Really. Monster offers three plans ranging from $249 per month for one job; $449 per month for two jobs; and $999 per month for five jobs. Indeed is priced at $395 for one job post for 30 days, with discounts for multiple openings and ZipRecruiter was priced slightly lower, starting at $249 for one month for one job post. However, it only allows one user per account. If you want to be able to download resumes too, the price bumps up to $349 monthly.


As you can see from a few examples, it costs around $300 per month to advertise a single job position on one of the major job boards. According to Zety, only 30% of companies are able to fill a vacant role within 30 days. The other 70% take anywhere between 1 - 3 months to process a new hire, the average being 42 days. This means the majority of the time you will end up renewing your ad.


Even if we leave out career events, background/drug test, on-boarding and training cost you get a pretty good idea of how hiring costs add up so quickly!
